I am a freelance museums and heritage consultant with over 20 years’ experience in the sector. I specialise in managing, developing and delivering projects that involve partnerships, audiences and storytelling for museums, heritage sites and sector support organisations, in the South West and nationally, to help them reach and engage new and existing audiences more effectively. I have a collaborative approach to projects and delivering the ideas of clients, maintaining a can-do attitude and creative thinking. My South West trustee roles have provided me with substantial sector intelligence, as well as professional connections.
Background:
I spent the first nine years of my career employed in museums, delivering collections management, interpretation, and public programmes, all with a strong focus on reaching wider audiences and community engagement. In my freelance roles I’ve taken this experience and built on it, working with many museums on development journeys with a particular focus on evaluation, audience development, and working in partnership – learning a lot more along the way!
My career began in local history, managing Vestry House Museum in London, then leading on developing a new museum – Museum of Cardiff, which opened in 2011. For three years I coordinated and developed Bath Museums, a partnership of all 13 Accredited museums in Bath, the tourism sector, and other partners, delivering audience development work around joint market research, marketing, interpretation, community engagement, and associated project evaluation. I spent two years at Volunteer Makers, a digital engagement programme for volunteering in museums, as Engagement and Marketing Manager.
Since then I have worked with clients including South Somerset Heritage Collection, South West Heritage Trust, Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, Bishops Palace Wells, Teign Heritage Centre, Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, Bridport Museum, the Holburne Museum, South West Museum Development, Rural Museums Network, and Association of Independent Museums. I was previously Chair of the SW Federation of Museums and Art Galleries and am currently a trustee of Glenside Hospital Museum, Bristol.
