”Measuring up”: ways of capturing social value and more intangible outcomes’

Increasingly visitor studies is being asked to help understand and demonstrate the value and impact that cultural and heritage institutions have on broader public agendas such as health and wellbeing, social justice, inclusion, place making and the environment.
This year’s Visitor Studies Group conference aims to explore and interrogate this idea. We’ll be hearing from a variety of speakers, from inside and outside the cultural heritage sector, who will reflect on their own experiences of dealing with this challenging type of evaluation to share top tips and lessons learnt.
Our keynote speakers, Janice Lane (Director of Gallery Development and Visitor Experience, National Museum Wales) and Anoushka Kenley (Evaluation Consultant, New Philanthropy Capital) will share perspectives from both the museum and the charity sector. Practitioners and researchers from Historic Royal Palaces, Glasgow Centre for Population Health, Heritage Lottery Fund, University College London, The Audience Agency and more, will continue to develop the conversation throughout both days, encouraging us to think about measuring impact in new, and potentially, different ways
Join us in tackling questions including: who in the arts, culture, and heritage sector is collecting this data and what is being done with it to effect change? What practical frameworks have been tested out to effectively demonstrate the successes, implications and challenges of these agendas in our organisations? What can we learn from the inevitable failures as well as the successes?
